After a whole lot of tinkering I've been making slow progress on a total UI re-theme the past couple of weeks since returning to SWGemu after five years away. R1 has quickly become my favorite server, and with the new Vader login splash overwriting my modded one I decided that instead of undoing it I would work on the login script instead!

This is using my own texture and a custom login screen UI script, and has lots of issues beyond a first glance. Chiefly the error messages, server unavailable and other popups aren't themed and retain their Alpha Blue standard skin.

This might get finished eventually along with a stock UI texture version, but I've certainly got my hands full and this experiment was just for a friend of mine who wanted it:



Here's a preview of my very early semi-flat UI, using the Rebel Flight Suits palette. I've spent a lot of time templating out the original texture with new elements and recently did a first pass on remastering the mouse cursors. In general my goal has been to simplify the interface, removing ugly compression artifacts and SOE's heavy reliance on gradients in favor of a more crisp, flat look.

Disclaimer: I'm not a UI designer, artist or anything more than a stubborn tinkerer who likes to get in over his head. Feedback is welcome, since I have a lot to do and no clear idea where I'm going with this yet!

Huge shout outs to Shadowfox and Anach of #modthegalaxy. The Shadowfox compilation helped inspire me to make my own UI, while both Shadowfox and Anach have been a ton of help sorting out quirks in SOE's scripts, format requirements for the DDS output, and feedback on previews on IRC.

I'm testing against 100% opacity in settings using Rebel Flight Suits as my base, so some of the custom ones (especially the very high contrast Caveman ones) may not look as good.

Progress on the crafting panels! Somewhat out of date now after a couple hours tuning them, but there are 7 scripts for crafting alone so it's a decent bit of work!

Hi Apex, we talked a bit in game about this interface. It's looking really good.

I'm very interested as to how you went about all this.

Do you have a guide maybe? I've started to look at the files using SIE tool, it looks like lots of XML, and lots of separate files.

I'd love to learn how you've made this.

Does your offer still stand from ingame chat?

I'm not using any tools, just sublimetext as an editor and photoshop for the texture work :)

Stop by irc.swgemu.com #modthegalaxy any time, I'm there all day pretty much. You can just ping me by name or send a PM and I'll get back to you ASAP. I can link you to my discord from there, since voice will probably make it a lot easier to step through the process and describe the XML structures and tags!
